Die Galerie annex14 freut sich, Ihnen mit der Ausstellung „The way the things I make behave“ neue Arbeiten des Künstlers Kristof Van Gestel(*1976, BE) zu zeigen.

Der Titel mag irreführend sein für einen Künstler, der mit seinen Arbeiten im Bereich der Skulptur zu verorten ist. Mit der althergebrachten Gattung Skulptur assoziieren wir vordergründig kaum Handlungsanweisungen, sondern eher Fragen nach den Verhältnissen von Volumen, Masse oder Proportionen.

Kristof Van Gestel verweist auf den Objektcharakter seiner Arbeiten, denen er damit eine gewisse Autonomie zuschreibt. Als autonome Dinge bringen sie sich als Mitakteure wie selbstverständlich in schon vorhandene räumliche Situationen ein und sind somit auch Raum schaffend. Indem der Künstler seine Objekte mit einem Handlungspotential auflädt, lenkt er die Aufmerksamkeit über die skulpturalen Aspekte hinaus auf raum-zeitliche Perspektiven und in Ansätzen auch auf dramaturgische Fragen.

Mit Materialien wie Teppich und Sperrholz, mit Formen, die Gebrauchsgegenstände wie auch skulpturale Formen assoziieren sowie mit einer Massstäblichkeit, die sich am Menschen und am alltäglichen Hausrat orientiert, lässt der Künstler den Status seiner Objekte zudem immer wieder im Unklaren. Sie entfalten dadurch, präzise im Dazwischen, ein zusätzliches Potential und kreieren so momentane Freiräume, innerhalb derer Gegenstands- und Raumbeziehungen neu verhandelbar werden.

The annex14 gallery has great pleasure in presenting new works by the artist Kristof Van Gestel (*1976, EB) in the exhibition entitled “The way the things I make behave”.

This exhibition title may seem enigmatic in the case of an artist whose works are categorised in the realm of sculpture. We scarcely associate instructions for action with the traditional genre of sculpture. Instead we expect issues to do with the relationship between volumes, mass and proportions.

Kristof Van Gestel draws attention to the object character of his works, thus granting them a certain autonomy. As autonomous things, they naturally assert themselves in the existing spatial situations, as co-actors, and so also create a space. By charging his objects with the potential to act, the artist directs our attention beyond the sculptural to the spatio-temporal aspects and to, in part, dramatic issues.

Furthermore, by using materials like carpet and plywood, and shapes associated more with utility goods and sculptural forms, with scales related to man and to everyday household items, the artist leaves the status of his objects unclear. As a result, they unfold an additional potential precisely in that in-between dimension, and thus create fleeting free spaces within which the relationships between objects and space are re-negotiated.
